Thinking about what you have read so far in Frankenstein, reflect on the idea of nature as either a restorative or destructive force. Do you believe Mary Shelley favors one more than the other? Using specific examples from the text - argue whether Mary Shelley believes nature is a restorative or destructive force.

I believe in this story Mary Shelley favors a destructive force due to the problems the creation caused in Victor's life when he murdered his younger brother out of hatred and anger. From this creation and the stress and guilt it put on Victor it lead to his death. There are many examples of when the creation was shown as a destructive force throughout the story and on the lives of the characters in the story.

She is saying that we can't take on the role of God. Victor Frankenstein tried to create life from death and the consequences were dreadful. He tried to defy the natural order. Sometimes scientific research and success has serious implications. When the monster asks him to create a companion for him, though, Victor feels it's not morally right, even though that would save his family.

I think she favors nature as a destructive force. The power of the lightning hitting a tree earlier in the book and basically destroying it and peaking Victors interest in harnessing the power of electricity. Or the gothic convention of the storm when Victor spots a silhouette of the creature with a flash of thunder. The creature represents most of the bad and destructive things that have happened in the book due to victor trying to harness the power of electricity (nature) and that nature only causes destruction. You could say the creature was born from man trying to harness the power of nature, and it has led to nothing but destruction. I.e. William's death, and now the monster threatening Victor into making him a companion or he would kill everyone he loves.
