What do you guys think the theme was? It was an entertaining story, but I'm not quite sure what Poe thought readers should take from it.

I think the fire in the beginning symbolized his sin and hell. Like he was going to hell for his sin.

I agree with dylan and how the alcohol consumed his life and he took it out on his pets and wife.

In my opinion the fire represented the narrator's alcoholism. Like fire, the alcohol consumes. Alcohol consumed the narrator's life.

I agree completely with the idea that fire and alcoholism are connected in the story. They are both symbols of how his life disappeared right before him, and it explains symbols of fire throughout the story.

The imagery of when he killed his wife stuck out to me, how he said she fell without a breath.

I see how the fire could symbol how booze was controlling his life but i mean if the guy wants to drink i guess thats his decisions he liks getting weird and getting crazy but he should see a therapist because he beat his wife and animals.

The imagery of the corpse's body in the wall at the end of the story gives me the chills imagining it. The words used to describe the wife came put a clear picture in your head.

I think that Poe did a good job explaining the gruesome moments in the story and making them worse by explaining how it actually helped him.

I don't think he felt guilty because i mean he kinda said yolo when the cops came and he slept good didn't care and him and the cats need to eathier talk about it or just fight already its getting old.

The narrator almost didn't seem like he was human if he had no remorse for his violent actions. I don't know how he could live with himself after doing those horrible things. He should be put in a mental institution.

At the end of the story, I don't think the narrator was the slightest bit guilty about the things he did, even if he said he was. He explains how he slept better and it gave him relief when his wife was dead and the 'beast' was gone.

I believe his cousin/wife died young, and many of Poe's works feature a young woman dying. Do you think he was mourning or going insane like many of his characters?

I wanted to know what happened after they discovered the cat. Like if he was put in a mental institution or just put in jail. It was a cliffhanger.

I think the cat and its name being pluto was foreshadowing since pluto is like the ruler of the underworld like it was bound to come back and drive him insane. He was suppose to give him hell from the start

There seem to be a lot of similarities between this and "The Tell-Tale Heart." When the authorities are investigating, the protagonist thinks he's doing great dodging suspicion, but a remnant of his crime blows his whole story. Also, the character is slowly going insane and nervous during interrogation (tapping on the wall, pounding heart). Just some thoughts!
